MGE Offers More Wind Energy To Its Customers

Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) of Madison, Wis., has expanded its green pricing program that offers customers access to renewable energy.

According to MGE, the extended program will allow customers who want even more renewables in their power mix to pay a premium for additional wind resources. Under the program, a typical household using 600 kWh per month will be able to offset the CO2 emissions from their home electricity use for less than $10 per month.

With MGE's purchase of 30 MW of Iowa wind announced earlier this year, all of the company's customers will have 3.5% of renewable energy in their electricity mix by the end of January 2008, MGE says. This percentage will meet the statewide renewable portfolio standard for 2010 that is required by law.

MGE's current program provides about 15,000 MWh per year of Wisconsin-based wind energy to about 4,300 customers, the company adds. With its new plans, MGE will grow the program to at least 45,000 MWh per year - depending on customer interest.
