Fox Islands Wind LLC, a subsidiary of the Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, is now overseeing the first construction phases of a wind energy project that will be located in Vinalhaven and North Haven, Maine. When work on-site is completed later this year, 3 1.5 MW GE wind turbines will be feeding electricity directly to the power distribution system on the two islands.

The turbines are expected to stabilize power prices on the islands - a benefit that has won the overwhelming support of the islanders for the project, according to the cooperative. Any surplus power that is generated by the wind turbines will be sold back to the regional grid via the submarine cable that currently delivers electricity to the islands.

Cianbro Corp., the general contractor building the project, is responsible for transporting components, erecting wind turbines and creating the electrical infrastructure.

Wind turbine components are expected to arrive mid-August. Cianbro crews will erect the wind turbines through mid-September. Substantial mechanical completion of the project is slated for the end of October, and the project is expected to begin producing power in November.

Initial financing of the project in the amount of $4.8 million was provided by Diversified Communications, a Portland, Maine-based international media company.
