Colorado Initiative Encourages Wind Power Projects

| State representatives in Colorado have introduced a clean energy initiative that provides incentives to develop projects that use the state's wind power potential. According to Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald and House Majority Leader Alice Madden, the energy package will create building and construction jobs for the state. "We have only just begun to tap the enormous wind energy potential from Colorado's Eastern Plains," says Leland Swenson, the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union's executive director. "This energy plan will create economic benefits for rural Colorado." The initiative includes the Renewable Energy Development Act of 2007, which sets a renewable energy standard where electric utilities will receive 20% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. It also includes Wind on Wires, which is an incentive program that encourages energy companies to build or upgrade transmission lines for wind power. The Wind for Schools program creates funding for K-12 schools and community colleges to install wind turbines. |
