GE, AES Plan Partnership To Offset Greenhouse Gas Emissions

AES Corp., an Arlington, Va.-headquartered owner and operator of renewable energy facilities, including wind, and Stamford, Conn.-based GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of General Electric (GE), have created a partnership to develop renewable energy projects in the U.S. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the companies, the partnership would seek to create an annual production volume of 10 million tons of greenhouse gas offsets by 2010. Projects to capture and destroy emissions would include methane-based projects, as well as electricity generated from renewable sources. The partnership would sell offsets from these projects to commercial and industrial customers.

Together, the companies plan to invest in projects using equipment from a variety of manufacturers, potentially including GE products certified by its ecomagination program. Part of GE's ecomagination effort is developing wind turbines for terrestrial and offshore use.
