Vancouver, British Columbia-based Finavera Renewables Inc. has signed a relationship protocol with the Saulteau First Nations in British Columbia. The protocol will guide communication activities and efforts to build trust and sustain a long-term working relationship as the company develops 295 MW of wind energy projects in the Peace Region of the province.

"The Saulteau First Nations and Finavera Renewables wish to build trust and a productive relationship between us in areas of mutual interest, and we both share the values of responsibility to our respective communities, respect for the environment and commitment to a constructive working relationship," says Jason Bak, CEO of Finavera.

Saulteau First Nations and Finavera Renewables have agreed to work together to begin to address the priorities identified by both parties, which include the following:

- land and resources management as it pertains to the location and access to the wind energy project sites within Treaty 8 territory,

- lands office support to address capacity issues associated with the environmental assessment of Finavera's proposed wind energy projects, and

- employment and economic benefits that enhance employment and contracting opportunities for Saulteau First Nations people throughout the various phases of development of Finavera Renewables' proposed wind energy projects.

According to Finavera, culture and indigenous knowledge will be respected and incorporated into the company's proposed wind energy projects as the information becomes available. In addition, environmental values will be addressed, and the two parties will work together to minimize the environmental impacts of their respective activities and to rehabilitate the environment where possible.

Both parties commit their mutual support to protecting the natural environment through respectful, sustainable clean energy project development, and by avoiding detrimental environmental impacts for the benefit of all.
