The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) has named the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) as winner of the R.J. Templin Award at a gala banquet in Vancouver this week.

The R.J. Templin Award recognizes outstanding scientific, technical, engineering or policy work supporting the development of wind energy in Canada.

CanWEA praised the AESO for developing a market and operational framework for wind integration, for undertaking a wind forecasting pilot project using international vendors - which was completed in May - and for advancing transmission system reinforcements to interconnect wind.

"We appreciate the support we've received from industry stakeholders in Alberta who have worked collaboratively with the AESO to develop the market and operational framework and to implement the required processes and procedures that will allow us to accommodate the variability of wind on our electricity system," says Warren Frost, AESO vice president of operations and reliability.

The AESO's market and operational framework, released March 8, 2007, to general support from stakeholders, outlines the mitigation measures and associated costs to market participants and wind developers for large-scale wind integration to the Alberta grid.
