The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's board of water and power commissioners has approved an agreement to purchase 50 MW of renewable energy from Powerex Corp., a Vancouver, British Columbia-based marketer of energy products, for a five-year period.

The agreement provides for the purchase of 438,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, which is enough power to serve approximately 70,000 homes per year. During the first year, LA Water and Power says it will purchase renewable energy from several small hydro-electric generating facilities in the Pacific Northwest. But later the company expects to purchase other types of renewable energy, including wind.

"This agreement is part of a comprehensive effort to expand the availability of clean energy to power LA," says Antonia Villaraigosa, the city's mayor. "Coupled with other recently approved clean energy contracts and ongoing projects, LA Water and Power is well on its way to reaching its goal of 20 percent renewable energy by 2010."

Under the agreement, the renewable energy will be delivered to LA Water and Power at the Nevada-Oregon border and shipped to Los Angeles via the Pacific DC Intertie (a north-south transmission line owned by the utility).
