Calgary, Alberta-headquartered Nexen Inc., a developer of wind power, and GW Power Corp., a Calgary-based company that focuses on the development, acquisition and management of wind power projects throughout Canada, have recently announced the opening of their $113 million Soderglen wind farm located southwest of Fort Macleod, Alberta.

The 70.5 MW wind power project is a 50-50 joint venture between Nexen and GW Power, the companies say. The 47 1.5 MW turbines began producing electricity in early September and have the capacity to produce enough energy to provide electricity for 25,000 homes, which would offset 95,000 tons of CO2 per year.

"This is an important step for Nexen," says Charlie Fischer, Nexen's President and CEO. "It's an innovative, environmentally-conscious way to add power to the Alberta power grid, and it also helps us to manage our overall corporate CO2 emissions."

In addition, the government of Canada will invest more than $20 million over 10 years in the Soderglen Wind Farm through the Wind Power Production Incentive program.
