Residents of Lewis County, N.Y., recently celebrated the completion of the first phase of the Maple Ridge Wind Farm, owned by Portland, Ore.-based PPM Energy and Houston-headquartered Horizon Wind Energy.

The first phase of the wind farm, which includes the towns of Martinsburg, Lowville, Watson and Harrisburg, is 231 MW of capacity consisting of 140 1.65 MW Vestas turbines. Additional turbines under construction for phase two will bring the total to 195 turbines producing up to 320 MW - enough to power up to 160,000 homes, PPM Energy says. Once complete, the wind farm will prevent the annual emission of approximately 586,117 tons of carbon dioxide, 627 tons of nitrogen oxide and more than 812 tons of sulfur dioxide, which is equivalent to taking 105,000 cars off the road.

"The partnering of PPM Energy and Horizon Wind Energy to create the largest power plant built in New York this year has resulted in another bold stride forward for the Empire State," comments Peter R. Smith, president and chief executive officer of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which supported the project through the Renewable Portfolio Standard Program. "The children of New York, some of whom participated in the dedication, will be the beneficiaries of this clean energy initiative."
