National Envelope has signed a multi-year contract with Norcross, Ga.-based Sterling Planet for the purchase of 18 million kWh of renewable energy credits (RECs) from wind energy projects nationwide. RECs are created when producers generate electricity using wind turbines.

According to National Envelope, an envelope manufacturer headquartered in Uniondale, N.Y., because of the purchase approximately 25 million pounds of carbon dioxide will avoid being released into the atmosphere.

"We selected Sterling Planet as our provider because we were looking for the greatest value that would enable us to do our part for the environment while continuing to deliver the best quality envelopes at the lowest cost," says Nathan Mose, National Envelope's chief executive officer.

With the purchase, National Envelope also gained entry into the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership and its Green Power Leadership Club, the company adds.
