REpower Installs Turbine In North Sea

| REpower, a producer of wind turbines for the Germany sector, has set up a 5 MW turbine in the Scottish North Sea - 25 km from the port of Nigg. It is the first of two turbines for the Beatrice demonstrator wind farm that has just been set up on a lattice-like jacket structure, piled to the seabed at a depth of 44 meters. According to the company, this is the first wind turbine be set up this deep in water and the largest offshore. After the second 5 MW turbine is installed, they will be linked to the grid connection of the Beatrice Alpha oil rig and then commissioned, the company says. The nacelles, which were built in Bremerhaven, have been transported by cargo ship to the Scottish port of Nigg. One after another, the 59 meter-high towers, nacelles and rotors for the turbines were assembled there. Some of the reasons why REpower chose to install the turbine in the water is because of the wide space, high wind speeds and less turbulence compared to land. |
