On July 24, Texas-based Sage Oil Vac Inc. delivered its Offshore Gear Oil Exchange System (GOEX) to Chemical Corp. Ltd. in South Wales, U.K. The two companies have teamed up with U.K.-based James Fisher Marine Services to launch an oil transfer system for the drain, flush and fill of offshore wind gearbox oils from an access vessel.

According to Sage Oil Vac, the James Fisher Marine Ship-to-Turbine service engages the proven vacuum, preheating and filtration technology of the Sage Oil Vac GOEX to transfer the oil from a self-contained, deck-mounted unit through fluid transfer hoses - directly eliminating the need to fill and hoist containers via the nacelle crane. The Ship-to-Turbine lubricant exchange service will be provided through James’ new, multi-role Supacat SMV 24 offshore vessel. 

Sage Oil Vac says the GOEX itself is constructed inside an offshore container that accommodates all equipment including three tanks, electrical components, heating elements and a filtration system. And since the GOEX connects directly to the gearbox, the unit also features breakaway couplings for all hoses. These stainless-steel couplings were designed as a safety mechanism to prevent hose breakage in the event the vessel were to stray from the wind turbine, adds Sage.
