The Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE) says wind power was the No. 1 source of electricity in Spain last year. Citing the 2013 advance report from system operator Red Electrica de Espana, AEE notes the power demand coverage using wind was 20.9%, compared with 20.8% coming from nuclear.

The group adds that wind energy production during 2013 was 54,478 GWh, representing a 13.2% increase over 2012. Nuclear produced 2,337 GWh more than wind last year; however, AEE explains that nuclear's contribution to the power demand coverage was lower because it consumes more electricity than wind to run its facilities, and this is deducted when calculating power demand coverage.

The group notes that wind power beat other maximum levels in 2013. On Feb. 6, it scored a new record of instantaneous power, with 17,056 MW at 3:49 p.m. That very same day, between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., it also exceeded the previous historic highs for hourly power, with 16,918 MWh.
