One month after the world's largest offshore wind farm officially opened, the second largest offshore wind farm has been energized in the U.K.

The U.K.'s 500 MW Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Project, which was jointly developed by SSE Renewables and RWE Innogy, is located 23 kilometers off the coast of Suffolk. The project, powered by 140 Siemens turbines, is expected to provide an average of 1,750 GWh of electricity a year, exceeding the electricity demand of  Suffolk. The project is also expected to double in size when the planned Galloper wind farm extension is completed in 2017.

According to SSE, Greater Gabbard was for many years the largest wind farm under development and was the first to be sited more than 12 miles offshore. It continues to be the furthest from shore and, in depths of up to 34 meters, is in the deepest water of any commercial U.K. offshore wind asset.

The London Array, the largest offshore wind farm, opened last month in a ceremony attended by U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron.
