At one point during the evening of Dec. 2, 30.2% of Southwest Power Pool's (SPP) power generation came from wind energy - a record for the grid operator, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).

At that time, 5.9 GW of wind energy capacity was delivering power onto the SPP system. Then, on Dec. 5, the utility hit another wind power record, at 6.296 GW, but the percentage penetration at that time did not surpass the 30.2% record.

SPP is slated to have 7.78 GW of total wind power capacity on its system by the end of the year, according to AWEA.
