A 233 MW expansion of the Buffalo Gap II wind energy project near Abilene, Texas, has achieved commercial operation - bringing the total capacity of Buffalo Gap II to 354 MW and making the wind farm the third largest in Texas, according to Arlington, Va.-based AES Corp., a global generator and distributor of electric power.

AES plans to sell all of Buffalo Gap II's electricity to Texas retail electric provider Direct Energy at a fixed price under a 10-year power purchase agreement.

"Wind generation is a key component of AES' broader alternative energy business," says William Luraschi, executive vice president and president of alternative energy at AES. "AES sees tremendous opportunities in wind generation and recently announced plans to more than triple our wind-generated megawatts by 2011."
