Construction has started on the Community Wind South wind farm, which when completed, will feature Minnesota's tallest turbines, according to juwi Wind, the project's developer.

The 30 MW Community Wind South wind farm, located in Nobles County, Minn., will feature 15 2 MW REpower MM92 machines with a 100-meter hub height. According to juwi, the first foundations have been poured and turbine delivery is scheduled for later this summer. Signal Energy Constructors will construct the project, which will be completed in October.

Xcel Energy has agreed to buy the project's output under a long-term power purchase agreement. Juwi notes that it will operate the project, with community members owning an undisclosed portion.

Boulder, Colo.-based juwi Wind is the North American subsidiary of the juwi Group, an international developer of wind, solar and other renewable energy projects. To date, juwi has installed approximately 540 wind turbines worldwide at 106 sites, producing a total output of approximately 950 MW. The company is named for founders Fred Jung and Matthias Willenbacher and is based in Worrstadt, Germany.
